There is confusion around the popular notion that we create our own reality by our
thoughts and the choices.  It is not the idea that choices are made through us that I
am calling into question, but rather the perception that we have individual power to
control our own destiny.

Do we have the supreme power to control our own destiny and if so why are our
lives not filled with more of what we want? Is it because we are doing it wrong?
Why does our power to create only seem to work some of the time? Why do good
people with good thoughts suffer?  Why do babies and innocents suffer? We
assume the physical brain is the source of our thoughts. Thoughts arise in the
brain, but is our brain the ultimate source of our thoughts? Why do we think some
thoughts sometimes and other thoughts at other times?   Where do thoughts arise
from and what gives thought the power to arise?  We all have experienced thoughts
that seem to come from nowhere, horrible thoughts as well as inspired thoughts
and thoughts of genius that seem like gifts from somewhere else.

Are we more than our physical being? If we go by the premise that our thoughts only
come from our own physical brain and we as individuals are the only source of our
thoughts and our thoughts create or co-create, (as some would say), our reality…
then is the brain in charge of our life and future destiny?  The word destiny implies
there is no choice.

Is the breath simply a bodily function or is there a life force within our breath that
breathes us?  Is this life force only within us or is it also outside of us?  And if there
is this other element to us, where is the line between us and it? Perhaps the
answer is so entwined in us and everything else, and it is of an unimaginable,
infinite scale, so it is simply unseen and unknown to us until we look deeper
beyond our assumptions to see. Some people might say that it is our soul that is
responsible for these things, but then we could ask these same questions of the
soul.

From my perception, something much bigger than our individual self sources our
life and everything else.  I would call this thing Consciousness and I would go as
far as to say that Consciousness is all that exists and all the levels of perceiving it
is also contained within the whole of Consciousness. When Consciousness is
seen fully, it pushes away the notion of individual realities appearing separate from
the One.  Perhaps what we think of as ‘us’ as an individual, is actually only a vehicle
for Consciousness.  Vehicles as bodies are seemingly separate things, but from
the perception of Consciousness there is no separation.

In order to function, it is necessary that we carry on as if we are the individuals we
appear to be.  However, at the same time, we are capable of perceiving the Infinite
Whole.  There is the Reality of 'what Is' and then there are our perceptions of it.  Do
we perceive ourselves and creation as One Consciousness or do we perceive
ourselves and others as separate individuals with our own individual power to
create and control our own destiny?

The teachings of enlightened sages throughout the ages, have never mentioned
individuals creating their own reality, but have always pointed to Consciousness as
the only Reality.  It is from this ultimate perception that inner peace and freedom is
found and the Self fully Realized.
